Tangram Architekten has been selected to work in a multidisciplinary team on a design study for ‘The city of the future’. This year we are going to study at the test location Fellenoord in Eindhoven.
In total there are five test locations of 1 x 1 km in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Eindhoven. The various teams are looking at new ways of making a city. Tangram Architekten is chairman of the Eindhoven team (Triangle team). The aim of the design study ‘The city of the future’ is to give direction to future urban developments. Not science fiction, but a real future. The central question is: how can we create an attractive and future-proof urban environment? Is it possible to devise an approach that guarantees a sustainable future, separate from specific tasks? A helicopter vision that goes beyond tackling current issues and politics.
The time horizon of the research is 2040, but the study is also working on steps and images for the intervening period. Ultimately, roadmaps should be created, roads that show how ‘The city of the future’ can be realized. The square kilometer where everything comes together is the size that we view at all locations.

Multidisciplinary teams

For this design study, multidisciplinary teams were formed with architects, landscape architects, urban planners, mobility experts, experts in the field of circular economy, energy transition, future strategies, smart cities, etc. We collaborate with municipalities, stakeholders and experts. During 2018 there will be master classes, local workshops and plenary meetings to work step by step towards visions and ideas. The results of the study will be bundled and published in early 2019.
