STUDENTEN & SHORT STAY

Cité, in the Kop van Zuid district in Rotterdam, is a residential building for students and short-stay occupants. The complex also includes collective and commercial amenities, work units and parking space. A skilful arrangement of spaces raised the density of homes by 20% compared to the original programme, making it possible to add a richly detailed façade and a spacious atrium without exceeding the available budget.

The main theme is spatial continuity. From the atrium, the building transitions from working to living, and from smaller homes in the low volumes to larger homes in the towers. The hall in the centre extends upwards a number of levels to form a semi-public, in-between space that introduces an urban feel into the building and encourages interaction.

Diagonal views, ‘floating’ office volumes and monumental staircases evoke a sense of spaciousness.

Commercial units are located on the ground floor, while the first floor provides access to the work spaces, sports facilities, meeting areas and apartment blocks.
A specially developed façade of concrete and glass gives the building a sculptural quality. It also results in a sense of scalelessness, since the floor heights are not legible externally and the building does not clash with the neighbouring office.
